Cab floor repair & painting

The cab floor had holes in it that were covered by Fort Worth ISD with sheet metal. Not sealed well the slightly leaking exhaust manifold was getting into the cabin. So I needed to make a more permanent fix to keep the cabin air clean. I started the project and like most projects forget to take pictures. I managed to get a few of the completed driver side and unstated passenger side, then pictures of after it was repaired and painted gloss almond. Keep in mind that I am using Rustoleum gloss almond diluted with mineral sprints and using a high foam roller to paint the truck. With the cabin, I just used undiluted paint with a brush, it will be covered with the floor mat. The parts that will be exposed I plan to repaint later with the roller method. I wanted to have a thicker base on the floor for added rust prevention. This is not a professional repair, just a quick fix to seal the floor and make it look just a little better.

Phase 2
Jul 20, 2006

The restoration begins. Painted the grille black and the rear bumper. Next step it to start the painting process of the truck. Going with the original Almond color. I will be using a not so heard of roller method to paint the truck. It involves using Rustoleum paint and a roller to apply the paint. Thinning it out a little with Mineral Sprints and then wet sanding it after it dries. Take about 2-3 coats, but when done right, it looks like it was spayed on. This process with be in a special album, "The Roller Paint Method".

Phase 3

This is how the truck will look, still have to finish the driver fender. It is dented up pretty good and I may just replace it. Will see, it may be just easier to repair it and cheaper.

Phase 4

Pretty much completed, added new front grille in black, chrome head light doors and trim. Added new corner lights and cleaned the front clear turns lenses. Finished the driver front fender and painted with the same roller method as the rest of the truck. Just have to paint the rims white and fix the front suspension. Buy a set of door panels and maybe a original radio. Paint the truck bed with bed liner paint in black, or just black Rustoleum. Then the truck will be completed.

The Roller Paint Method

The process of not spray painting your vehicle, but using a roller with multiple coats and wet sanding until it is a smooth finish. You use good old Rustoleum paint and thin it with mineral sprints, then just roll it on. Rustoleum makes a Gloss Almond that is a near perfect match, so this is what I am using. I am not worried about perfection, this is not a show truck. I am painting it this way because it is cheap and gives good results from all I have read about this method. This is the first time doing this, so I am only starting with the tail gate and finishing that. Then see how it looks and finish the rest of the truck. The body work will not be perfect, I am not going to fix every dent little ding. The tailgate has some good dents, they will stay. I will however do bondo work and fill most of the large dents, but if I miss something minor, no big deal to me. I am keeping the truck the same color, this is so I do not have to paint door jams and under the hood. I unfortunately do not have a large enough garage to do this, so it will be done outside. This means the paint will get some bugs, out of my control. I will do the best with wet sanding to get rid of them, but as I said this is not a show truck. The bed will be painted or spayed with bed liner, so no need to paint that.
